Priceless! I always wondered a bit about Sayers – her comments on thrift in “Why Work?” have always suggested to me a hint of the paternalistic infection. It is not, in fact, a sin to buy new socks rather than darn the old ones, if technological and economic advancement have reduced the price of socks while raising the value of your time such that you are neglecting more valuable opportunities to contribute to the sum of good in the world by turning aside to darn socks. This passage more than redeems her!
I think the distinction concerning “the new kind of leaders” is crucial.
